If you have a web presence online for your business and are anything like me, you are always looking for ways to increase traffic to your site.  More traffic = more visitors = more sales = more money.  The money part is the most important when running a business because it is what pays the bills and makes the hard work we put into our business worth every minute we could have spent watching The Profit.

So how do we get more traffic to our site?  Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has, and in my opinion, always will, play an important role when it comes to having a website have great ranking.  As many of you know, Google is numero uno when it comes to being the most used search engine.  Google search wants to make sure that it provides the user with the most relevant results, so content is key.  Not only content, but original content is the main characteristic on whether Google will decide if your startup website is a good match for the specific search.

This is why building a website in Flash is no longer relevant and why content driven website platforms such as WordPress are.  With a Flash website, it may look like a million bucks, but when a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or Bing comes to view the site, all they see is embedded video that has absolutely no real content related to the search term or phrase.  One way around this is to have a transcript of your Flash website or video to show search engines what exactly the Flash or video is about.  If you do not have the time to write a transcript from your Flash site or video, then hire someone on Fiverr to do so for as little as $5.

By simply having an ‘About’ page describing your business, the product/services you provide, and who you cater to (your audience) can have a tremendous impact with ranking for your startup website.  Another page that I’ve found to receive tons of traffic are ‘FAQ’ pages.  These pages are typically the most viewed page on every website.  Personally, I think it is because there are dozens of questions and answers listed with content, content, and content.  Keep this in mind when viewing Google search for something, how many times have you searched for a question?  How do I market my website?  How can I start a business with no money?  The best part of FAQ pages is they’re easy to make because they are the questions that you get day-in and day-out with running your startup.

See here for 20 examples of how some have built proper FAQ pages.

Another way to have unique content is by having a company blog.  You can write about topics you want your audience/customers to know about.  Such as, ‘The 5 Reason’s Why You Should Choose Us Over Them’, or ‘How to Effectively Use Widget A at Home.’  The possibilities are quite endless.  You can even write a blog post about an upcoming sales promotion for the holidays.  And if you feel that you’re not a strong writer, then hire someone to do it.  And it doesn’t have to be expensive either.  There are hundreds, if not thousands of willing writers on Fiverr that will write you a blog post for as little as $5.  Then, once you have this article written, feel free to post it on other sites with a link back to your site.  This process of linking back to your site is referred to as ‘backlinks’ and is worth an entire article that will come soon so stay tuned!

To sum things up, content seems to be a key factor when it comes to ranking.  But having any content will not do—make sure that the content you add to your start-up website is relevant to your business.  Coming from someone that builds websites for small businesses through Owl5 Creative, I always stress the importance of content, content, and more content.  And the quickest way to get content is to create a FAQ page.  Do it now!
